Another Lineman Has Irish Offer

Aurora, Colo. is home to two-way player Butch Lewis. At 6-7, 280 pounds, Lewis is a load and this top prospect already has some impressive offers under his belt including one from Notre Dame. We spoke with Lewis on Wednesday to see if Notre Dame has a shot at landing this top Regis Jesuit high school star.

College coaches certainly want lineman Butch Lewis, but they are having a hard time forming a consensus on which side of the ball suits him best.

"Some schools are saying offense. Some schools are saying defense. Some are just leaving it open to me," Lewis said when asked which side of the ball most schools are recruiting him for. "I prefer defense. I think I'm more of a defensive player."

While some confusion exists about his best position, there is no confusion about his worth as a football player.

"Notre Dame, Colorado, Nebraska, Georgia, Oklahoma, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa State and UCLA have offered me," Lewis said. "I have a lot more schools recruiting me, but those are the schools that have offered me."

We asked Lewis when Notre Dame offered him.

"I think it just came on Monday," he said. "The coaches told me they were recruiting me and very interested in me, but I didn't know that they were going to offer me."

Lewis said he was excited the Irish threw their hat in the ring for his services.

"I was very happy to get an offer," he said of his Irish offer. "They have great academics. They're televised every game. It's a big religious school which is a big plus for me."

Lewis also had the chance to speak with defensive line coach Jappy Oliver earlier this week as well.

"I talked to coach Oliver already," Lewis said. "He just gave me some information on the school and said they were really interested in me. He said he'd be talking to me a lot more in the future."

The Aurora, Colo. native has already taken a few official visits so far this spring.

"I've been to Colorado and Nebraska," Lewis said. "I really liked the atmosphere at both places. I'll probably try to go see a few more schools."

Lewis also said he's got a plan for making his decision.

"I'm looking for a school that will be looking out for me in all aspects and not just on the football field," Lewis explained. "I want a school with the best academics, and a coaching staff that can prepare me to go pro because that's everyone's dream.

"I probably won't make my decision until after my season. I want to play my senior year out and then take all my visits."

Does Lewis have some top schools right now?

"Yeah, Miami, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado and Michigan are probably the top schools right now," he said.

Comments: The Irish appear to be in the race for Lewis. He seemed very open right now to all schools and not leaning towards any particular school. We'll check back after May evaluation to see if Lewis plans to take any more unofficial visits. Top Stories
