West is a Playmaker

Notre Dame coaches Haywood and Weis recently stopped by Northeast high school in Oklahoma City (Okla.) and they weren't the only ones. George West (5-10, 185-pounds) is drawing a lot of recruiting attention from college recruiters from around the country. What did the Irish coaches talk about on their visit?

"They talked to my coach," explained George West. "He said they wanted me to know how much they liked me and how much they would like him to play for them, but they also want me to take my time. They don't want me to feel any pressure, like I need to make a decision soon. They want me to take my time and make a decision that's best for me.

"They were really concerned about the entire (recruiting) process," West continued "They talked about the fact that this is a big decision and where I'll be for the next five years."

The Irish coaches think they have found a very special player in West.

"They like my explosiveness and my ability to make plays," West said. "I'll catch a pass underneath and then make a play to get it in the end zone. I'm a speed guy. I can run a 4.4, but I can also make people miss.

West excels at both cornerback and wide receiver for Northeast, what position are the Irish coaches recruiting him to play?

"They are recruiting me as a wide receiver," West said. "Coach Weis said I was like Dion Branch and Troy Brown.

Does he have a preference where he plays in college?

"Not really," he replied. "If a school has a passing offense and throw the ball, I'd prefer wide receiver.

"If they have an aggressive defense, I'd play cornerback."

What if a school has both and passing offense and an aggressive defense?

"When it comes down to it, I want the ball in my hands. I want to make plays."

A number of schools have said that they are going to offer West or they have offered him verbally.

"Those don't count though," he said. "Notre Dame, Iowa St. and Texas Tech are the offers that I have in writing."

"I've had a bunch of schools visit me. I can't even name them all," West said. "There are some that have stopped by that I didn't even know were recruiting me because they hadn't ever sent me anything."

West doesn't have any plans to take any unofficial visits this summer, and he isn't at the point where he's started to narrow down his college choices.

"My parents and I haven't sat down to figure out what the next step is yet, but we will soon," he said. "I'm really open to everything. I'd like to go away for school."

The main schools West is currenlty considering are Notre Dame, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, and Stanford.

Comments: It seems like the Notre Dame coaches really like West. He's thoughtful and well spoken. The Irish are recruiting him to play wide receiver, but he has the athletic ability to play cornerback. It's tough to gauge his interest at this time, but I do think he likes the Notre Dame and I do think the Irish will get a visit from the talented playmaker.
