Linebacker Jared Norton is considered one of the top linebacker prospects in Texas for 2005.
"I missed two games last year, but I had 131 tackles and 16 tackles behind the line of scrimmage," Norton said of his junior season.
"I have offers from Texas, (Texas) A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Arizona, Arkansas, Nebraska, Iowa State, Mississippi State and Purdue," Norton said when asked which schools have offered him.
"Wisconsin and Notre Dame also are close to offering me," he added.
Norton says he's already spoken with an Irish coach this month.
"I spoke with Jappy Oliver already," Norton said. "He and my dad went to the same high school together so they know each other pretty well."
We asked Norton if he had any interest in Notre Dame at this point.
"Yeah, I do," he said. "They have a good education there. They have a new coach there as well so they're turning things around.
"Coach Oliver said they were going to look at my transcripts and see if they can offer me, and that coach Weis was coming here on the 19th to see me. My mom is from Fort Wayne (Ind.) so I know a little bit about Indiana."
The Rowlett, Texas native says he has a plan to make his decision early.
"My dad and I are going to visit a bunch of schools over the summer," Norton explained. "We'll probably go see five or six schools and then I'll try to make my decision by the end of the summer. I'd like to make my decision by then."
Will Notre Dame get a summer visit?
"That will depend on my dad and them," he said. "My dad is doing the driving so he'll have a say in it. I'm going to look at only the schools that have offered me by the end of May. Then I'll decide which schools to visit.
"I'd like to check out Notre Dame--get to meet some of their players and see what they're about. We'll see."
Comments: Norton is a new name who could receive and offer fairly soon. He's already landed some impressive offers and I doubt Weis would go see him if he wasn't a top guy. We'll check back later this week to see if he receives an offer from Notre Dame.
