"I spoke to Coach Weis last night," said defensive back Steve Brown. "He told me they were officially offering me and that they were putting the offer in the mail."
Brown said the Weis call was a relief.
"I'm happy that it's official," said Brown. "I'm not sure what happened, but now I have the assurance that the offer is here."
If Steve Brown was a secret before the Nike combine in Ann Arbor, he's a secret no more.
"He (Weis) said he came to the combine to see me," Brown explained. "He watched me for five minutes, met with his coaches and decided to offer me."
"There were 400 some kids there so it makes me feel good that he spent the time to come see me.
"He said he liked my athletic ability and said that all the Notre Dame coaches were real high on me.
"I wasn't just a recruit that they were throwing an offer at, but they felt that I could come into the program and be a big-time player."
What was Brown's impression of the new Irish head coach?
"He knows his stuff and he's a really good coach," Brown responded.
"Then again, I didn't have to talk to him to figure that out," he added jokingly.
Notre Dame and Michigan weren't the only programs that took notice of Brown in Ann Arbor.
"Ohio State offered me on Saturday," Brown said. "They had been talking to me a lot and were recruiting me as a running back, but I told them I didn't want to play running back, so they are now recruiting me as a defensive back."
Steve has some outstanding early offers, but as he has pointed out in the past, he will take his time and see what other offers come his way.
At some point this summer he will sit down with his family and start to narrow down his list of schools. As of now, his top schools are Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Florida, and Notre Dame.
Comments: Recruiters didn't have much film on Brown playing defensive back, so they wanted to see him workout before they offered. Steve made the trip to Ann Arbor hoping to impress the coaches in attendance. He ended up with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State--not bad.
