No coach in the country is outworking Charlie Weis. Weis and his staff have identified most of their top prospects, and Weis has made a point to stop in and visit nearly everyone of those prospects during the May recruiting period. Monday he was at Regis Jesuit to visit standout Butch Lewis.
"This morning coach Weis and coach Oliver were at my school," said Lewis. "They told my coach that they want me to come out for a visit; they want me to see the campus and come to a game.
Although he wasn't able to speak directly to the Irish coaches, Lewis has spoken to them on the phone in the past. What is his impression of the two Irish coaches?
"Coach Oliver is a cool guy - I like him. He's cool calm and collected," Lewis replied.
"I've talked to coach Weis in the past for about 15 to 20 minutes," he continued. "He seems like a nice, honorable man. Definitely a coach I could play for."
What else interests you about Notre Dame?
"I'd be going from a Catholic school to another Catholic school. That's definitely a plus," Lewis said.
Are the Irish recruiting him for offensive or defensive line?
"They are recruiting me for defensive line," he replied.
"Preferably defense," was Lewis' response when asked which side of the ball he'd like to play on in college.
We asked Lewis what he does well on the field.
"I'm aggressive and smart," he said. "I'm getting better at handling the double-team. I'm half technique and half athletic ability, but more technique.
"I watch film to learn what I need to improve on."
We asked Lewis which schools interested him the most other than Notre Dame.
"I'm really wide open, but the main schools are USC (offer), Texas (offer), Georgia (offer) and Miami," Lewis said.
"USC and Miami are recruiting me for offensive line. Notre Dame, Texas and Georgia are recruiting me for defense."
If you scheduled your official visits today, would those schools receive a visit?
"Yes," he replied. "I'm going to take all my visits and then making a decision."
Comments: Butch didn't appeared to be overly concerned about recruiting at this time, but with the early offers he has I guess there isn't much to be concerned about. I'll say it again; a Weis visit is a very good indication that the staff likes Lewis a lot. I do get the impression that the Irish are a little behind a couple other schools. There is time, and it's nice to know that he will take his visits.
