If you look at last year's receiving numbers for David Ausberry, you wouldn't expect him to be one most highly recruited receivers, but all you need to do is to look at the schools that have extended him a scholarship offer to realize that he is one of the most sought after receivers on the west coast.
"I have 13 so far," Ausberry said of his official offers. "I have offers from Michigan, Ohio State, California, USC, Ole Miss, Fresno State, UNLV, Nevada, Georgia, Nebraska, ASU, Arizona, and Washington State."
That is a very solid list of offers for late May, but he didn't list Notre Dame, so I asked David if the Irish were recruiting him.
"Yeah, they just started recruiting me," he replied. "I didn't even know they were until they stopped in at my school a couple days ago.
"It was coach Polian that stopped in," he added.
While at Lemoore, Coach Polian met with David's coaches to discuss their interest in their standout receiver. We asked David what coach Polian said to his coaches.
"They (Notre Dame) liked my playing style and my size," he explained. "It seems a lot of schools want bigger receivers now.
"I'm a physical receiver. I'm bigger and can go up for a jump ball. Once I get the ball I can gain a lot of yards after the catch."
With Notre Dame just starting to recruit Ausberry, how much interest does he have in the Irish?
"Pretty high interest," he said. "They're going to be putting in the Patriots offense so they'll be throwing the ball.
"They have a whole lot of athletes. I think it's a great degree; great academics and the athletics are great as well."
With so many schools recruiting David, we asked him if there was a main group that he was concentrating on at this time.
"I'm actually interested in all of them, he responded. "If a coach takes the time to call me, I will talk to him. I'm actually fortunate to be in this position, so I'm going to enjoy it. Not everyone has the chance to be in my situation."
Right now David seems like he will sit back and enjoy the recruiting process and watch the offer list grow.
"I am going to take some trips this summer," he said. "I basically want to travel across the nation and see as many schools as possible."
Ausberry reports a 2.9 GPA/May 7 test.
Comments: David is a solid kid and extremely likeable. Although Notre Dame is coming in late, I think they will have a chance with David. My guess is they are still behind several teams. The Irish will likely take one big receiver in this class. David could be that guy, but they need to offer first.
