Walls to Visit South Bend

Notre Dame might not have a cornerback higher on their wish list than Woodland Hills high school (Pittsburgh, Pa.) standout Darrin Walls. Walls has more schools chasing him than he cares to count, but there are three that have distanced themselves form the rest. Where do the Irish stand with Walls after the May recruiting period? Walls is making a couple unofficial visits this weekend, which schools is he visiting?

There have been rumors circulating that Darrin Walls (6-1, 180-pound) is planning a visit to Notre Dame this weekend. I caught up with the talented cornerback to see if he was indeed making a trip to South Bend.

"Yeah, I'm going with my dad and my step-mom," Walls said. "I'm going to be there Sunday, and then I'm going to Michigan on Monday.

"I'm going to talk to the academic department. I'm going to tour the campus and the dorms," he said.

"I was at Notre Dame for the spring game -- I really liked it," Walls added. "My dad is a big Notre Dame fan and it was everything he said it was."

Notre Dame has been recruiting Walls very hard, so I asked him which coaches he had spoken to and then what his impression was of each coach.

"I've talked to coach Lewis and coach Weis," he replied. "Coach Lewis is a nice guy. He's optimistic. I like that he coached with the Miami Dolphins and that he's been in the NFL.

"Coach Weis, I like him a lot. He's optimistic also. He tells me like it is and doesn't sugar coat anything. I like that a lot," said Walls.

There were three schools leading all others for Darrin's signature prior to the May recruiting period, so I asked him if anything had changed. M.O<

"Notre Dame, Michigan and Florida are my top three," he answered.

"I've been to Michigan before. I went to a game last year," Walls said. "I've been to Miami, but I haven't been to Florida. I did like the weather in Miami though."

During the conversation Darrin mentioned that he looks at a school's depth chart, and knowing that Notre Dame graduated three cornerbacks last year, I asked him about the other top schools.

"Florida – I know they lost a couple of corners," he said. "They do have some sophomore corners, but they aren't loaded. They could use three.

"Michigan lost two corners and they need three.

Notre Dame has received six commitments from offensive players already this season, but Notre Dame needs to get some defensive prospects in the fold, does Walls have an idea of when he was going to reach a decision.

"I was going to decide after my season, but I might decide before my season," said Walls when asked if he had an idea when he might make his final decision. "If I commit earlier, other players will see that and I might be able to help recruit."

Comments: Darrin is a solid kid – very likeable. He's the type of kid that would thrive at Notre Dame. It's no secret that the Irish need cornerbacks, but Michigan and Florida are also in need. This will turn out to be a very interesting race, and I don't think it is as clear as it once was.
