Bartley Webb (OT, 6-7, 290 pounds, Springdale, Ark.) has as many options at this stage of his recruitment as anyone could want, and more. But that certainly makes it difficult to sift through his list of suitors and find a short list.
"Within a couple of weeks I'd like to narrow it down to four, maybe five schools," Webb said when asked if he would like to make a summer decision.
Webb was uncertain if he would make a decision this summer, but did not rule out that possibility.
June means that summer camps are in full swing. Webb has already attended one-day summer camps at Arkansas and Texas, and might try and take in a couple more.
"I might go to camps at Michigan and Notre Dame," he said. "There are a few things that need to fall into place first. My mom teaches summer school so... Michigan would be June 22-23, and Notre Dame would be the 25th, I believe."
Webb met with Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt on Wednesday at the University of Arkansas. The Razorbacks are certainly one of the schools that are in the hunt to land the offensive tackle, but competition is stiff.
Who is recruiting Webb the hardest right now?
There are a few that are all about the same," Webb said. "Arkansas, of course, Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas...Florida too."
Wwhat will Webb be looking for when he decides?
"I just want to be some place I feel comfortable," Webb said.
SMITTY'S TAKE - The key for Notre Dame is having Webb make it to the summer camp or take an unofficial visit this summer. He may or may not be able to make it to camp, but at some point head coach Charlie Weis and his coaching staff need to have Webb come up to Notre Dame again.
Webb has been up twice to Notre Dame already, but admitted that he did not have the opportunity to really see the campus during his earlier stints. It was obvious during our conversation that the schools farther away from home were the ones he was still investigating.
Webb could end up at any one of several schools at this point. There is still a long way to go before he makes his final decision.
