One of the top defensive backs in the Midwest this year is Robert Williams, CB, 5-11, 160 pounds, Cincinnati, Ohio, (Withrow). While it is well known that Ohio State and Notre Dame are the top two schools for Williams' services, that does not mean he is not going to consider other schools.
So what if Ohio State and/or Notre Dame offer?"Oh, I'm going to wait until my (football) season to decide," Williams said quickly.
As for unofficial visits and camps this summer, Williams is taking a look at a couple of schools.
"I'm going to try and go to Illinois this summer, and I'm going to Ohio State this Friday for their one-day camp," he said.
Williams is unsure where the Buckeyes stand with him right now.
"Hopefully they'll offer me, but if they don't, I guess that means they don't want me," he said.
And the Irish?
"Notre Dame wants me to get my GPA up," Williams explained. "I had a 2.4, but I raised it to a 2.5 after the third quarter. It should go up again after the next quarter. Notre Dame should be offering me real soon, but they didn't say what I needed to raise it to though."
Williams has scored an 18 on the ACT, which would be a qualifying score.
Notre Dame has not been active in Cincinnati for quite some time. What do the Irish coaches tell Williams they like about him?
"They said they liked me because I'm fast, physical, can hit and can cover," he said.
Speaking of physical, that's what Williams likes about playing football.
"I love to hit. I love hitting," he added.
Since Williams plays with current Notre Dame commitment Kallen Wade, DE, 6-5, 215 pounds, I mentioned that Wade was a physical player for his size from the film I watched.
"He's huge! He's real physical," Williams said of Wade. "He's crazy. He's one of those crazy dudes that drinks like six red bulls before a game."
SMITTY'S TAKE - Williams is a talkative young man. He loves to talk football. There's nothing I like more than talking football so our conversation went well.
Williams probably has more work to do in the classroom before Notre Dame can make a formal scholarship offer, but if he continues to raise his g.p.a., that will become more and more likely to happen. Notre Dame is really high on Williams.
It will be interesting to see if Ohio State offers Williams on Friday.
