Defensive coordinator Rick Minter brought the Apache linebacker position to South Bend, so the Irish must recruit players to fit the system. The Apache position is a safety-linebacker hybrid, and Matt Wright (6-2, 210-pounds) might be the perfect fit for Minter's defense. But does this talented linebacker have interest in playing for Notre Dame?
"Yeah, actually I have interest in Notre Dame," replied Wright. "I understand that they have high standards and high qualifications, but I've talked to their coaches and they seem like a really good program and a place that I'd like to end up.
"They visited my school in May," continued Wright. "Then I talked to coach Latina when they made their one call in May. He said they were still going over film, so they haven't offered yet, but I have a good feeling about them and they seem close to offering.
It's no surprise to learn that the Irish aren't the only school interested as Wright's offer list grew during the May recruiting period.
"Recently I got about 10 offers," said Wright. "I've got about six ACC schools, so everything is going real well right now. It has been slowing down now that the May evaluation period is over.
"It was a relief, I knew I was going to get recruited but I didn't expect all the offers" Wright said. "That was the most hectic time though, being pulled out of class by coaches, it was real hectic. Everything is going good though because I've got a lot of offers.
"I don't have a top five or anything. I'm looking at a lot of east coast schools like Virginia Tech(offer), Virginia (offer), N.C. State (offer), North Carolina (offer), but my options are wide open. I'm looking at some out of state schools Michigan State (offer), Syracuse (offer), Notre Dame, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Miami. Those are my main group of schools that I'm considering.
"Michigan State and Notre Dame are two of my favorite out of state schools that I'm considering," he added.
With a number of attractive options will Matt be making a decision anytime soon?
"No time soon, it's really not even a concern for me right now. I'm focusing on now, my last year, my senior year in high school," he said.
Comment: Although Matt is considering a lot of East Coast schools, it seems like he had genuine interest in the Irish. Notre Dame is probably behind the other schools, because they have just recently picked up their recruitment of Wright. The fact that Notre Dame stopped by Phoebus high school to visit Matt, means the staff is very interested in him.
