Kates Not Ready Yet

There have been rumors circulating that defensive tackle Jason Kates was close to setting a date to announce his college decision. Irish Eyes spoke with Kates to verify if a date had indeed been scheduled.

One of the Bishop McDevitt high school (Harrisburg, Pa.) standout football prospects made his college choice this week when quarterback Jeremy Ricker committed to the Maryland Terrapins. Has defensive tackle Jason Kates decided to schedule a date to announce his decision?

"Nah, I'm still deciding," Jason Kates replied when asked if he had selected a day to announce his college choice. "We (Kates and his coach) don't even know right now."

Jason has been in close contact with the Irish coaching staff throughout his recruitment, so I asked him if he had spoken to any of the Notre Dame coaches lately.

"I talked to coach Latina a couple weeks ago," he responded. "I don't want to bother him right now when he's on vacation."

Notre Dame has been consistently mentioned as one of the main schools that Jason is considering at this point, so as the summer moves on, which schools are making the biggest push for his signature?

"Notre Dame, Penn State and Syracuse kind of stick out now," Kates said when asked which schools had made the biggest impression on him.

"Virginia Tech has picked up the recruiting lately. I haven't been over there, but I have been to Virginia and they have a nice campus," he added.

Comments: There have been rumors floating around that Kates was going to announce with Jeremy Ricker, but obviously that was not the case. Jason has told me all along that a decision could come the next day or in five months, so I'm not surprised that he is still contemplating his decision.
