McDaniel Focusing on Six

Notre Dame is in dire need to of playmaking wide receivers. Damon McDaniel of Landstown high school (Virginia Beach, Va.) is a player the new Irish coaching staff was hoping to lure to South Bend with the promise of plenty of opportunity for early playing time.

Damon McDaniel isn't getting the notoriety that his teammate and fellow wide receiver Percy Harvin is getting from recruiting analysts, but his offer list is just as long as Harvin's. Has Damon been able to narrow down his list of schools?

"I've got a top six," McDaniel replied. "Virginia, Virginia Tech, LSU, Oklahoma, Miami and Florida. They're probably pretty even.

"I just took an unofficial trip to Miami and Florida," he said. "They went real good.

"I liked the coaches, they're just like the coaches at my school," McDaniel said when asked about his unofficial trip to Coral Gables.

"We got to meet all the coaches at Florida," he continued. "They're pretty nice guys down there, too."

The Notre Dame coaching staff was recruiting McDaniel very hard earlier in the recruiting process, yet they were noticeably absent from Damon's final six schools. McDaniel mentioned that the Irish coaches did visit his school during the May evaluation period, so I asked him if they were still recruiting him heavily.

"I don't think so," he replied. "I haven't really been receiving any mail from them lately."

Comment: When I talked to Damon earlier in the year, he said he would watch how Notre Dame performed under the new coaching staff. It appears that he isn't waiting for the season, and that he is moving on with his top schools, and the Irish appear on the outside looking in. Top Stories
