Athlete George West can play a number of positions, which has made him a hot propsect this season. The 5-8, 165-pound West is up to 16 offers, and the Irish have been one of his favorite schools throughout his recruitment. West said he just couldn't find the time to visit South Bend this summer, however.
"I'm not going to be able to make it," said West when asked if he still planned to visit Notre Dame this summer. "I really wanted to, but I've got my season starting soon and we just got back from our vacation and we just didn't have time to fit it in."
West did say he's been in recent contact with the Notre Dame coaching staff.
"I just talked to coach Ianello yesterday, and I also talked to coach Haywood," he said. "We're trying to set up an official visit there during my season. We don't have a date set yet.
"I have a couple of Thursday night games this year so we're trying to work it so I can visit during one of those weeks so I can get get in a whole visit to see everything.
"I'm supposed to call them back today so we can finalize that."
West has said he was somewhat worried he might miss an opportunity if he didn't decide soon. Might he commit somewhere before his season?
"I was kind of concerned about that," West admitted. "I didn't want to be shut out anywhere. The Notre Dame coaches have been great. They told me if I needed to take my time, that they'd wait. I'd like to see the school before I made any decisions.
"I've also talked with my friends and they say that it might be better to just decide before my season so I don't need to worry about all the recruiting stuff. I'll just see how it goes the first couple of weeks and then go from there."
We assumed West meant the first couple of weeks when college coaches can begin calling again starting September 1. We wanted to clarify that.
"Yeah, that's what I meant," he said. "I know it's going to get hectic again, and I don't want it to be a distraction. We'll see what happens.
"I'm just going to decide when it feels right. If it feels right, I'll go ahead and commit."
West did say he has started to narrow down his list, and he's doing research on all his favorites to narrow his list down futher. He didn't give us a list of his favorites because he said he didn't want to leave anyone out at this point.
Comments: It's obvious that the Irish lead the race for West's signature. West said he wants to visit South Bend before making his college decision and Irish fans will likely have to wait until that happens. However, it wouldn't surprise me if he did decide before taking his visits. We'll check back with West soon.
