Are the Irish Out for Lewis?

Haltom City, Texas linebacker Anthony Lewis had been saying he would take an unofficial visit to Notre Dame over the summer. However, last week Lewis was said to have dropped the Irish from consideration. We called Lewis on Monday and were surprised by our conversation with the 6-2, 220-pound Lewis. Are the Irish still in the race for Lewis? Will he visit Notre Dame?

Rumors swirled last week that linebacker Anthony Lewis had dropped Notre Dame from consideration. We followed up with Lewis to find out the latest.

"I just went to Notre Dame for a visit," said Lewis when asked if he still planned to visit South Bend this summer. "It went really well. I loved the campus there. It's a beautiful campus."

Lewis admitted he had thought of eliminating the Irish last week.

"I was thinking about the cold climate there," he explained. "I wasn't sure I wanted to play in that climate, but I decided to just go take a look anyway. I'm really glad I did take a look. I really liked it there."

The Haltom high school star said he spent considerable time in South Bend.

"We got there kind of late so we actually stayed there an extra day," Lewis said. "We wanted to check out everything there.

"We met coach Weis, coach Minter and coach Oliver. I really enjoyed talking with them. They told me how much they wanted me at linebacker. I got along well with all the coaches."

While Lewis liked a lot about Notre Dame, he admitted one negative still stands.

"The cold climate is still a factor that turns me off, but I really got along well with the coaches there. I also really liked the campus and I felt comfortable there. I didn't get to meet any of the players, but I think they've got a good group of players there."

Lewis originally told us he planned to take some unofficial visits this summer and narrow down his list.

"I still plan to take a few visits during my season," Lewis said. "I'm not sure how many, but I'll take a few. I'll set those up soon. I'll make my decision after my visits."

So where do the Irish stand after his unofficial visit?

"They're definitely in my top five," he said. "Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M are the other schools."

Comments: It's quite a coup just to get Lewis to visit in my eyes. He had all but eliminated the Irish, and now Notre Dame is in the race. We'd be surprised if Lewis didn't take an official visit to Notre Dame, but will distance and weather be too much to overcome?
