With Freddie Parish no longer a part of the Notre Dame football program an already thin group of safeties is becoming a bit scary in terms of numbers, and especially experience. Many people thought that Notre Dame would only take one safety this year. Do not bet on it.
Notre Dame recently offered Leonard Gordon, S, 5-11, 195-pounds, Fort Campbell, Ky. Gordon has been recruited hard by several schools to date, but was noticeably excited about his most recent offer.
"I received my recent offer from Notre Dame," Gordon proclaimed. "I got it about four or five days ago.
"Notre Dame, I like them a lot. They definitely shot up there (on my list)."
Gordon mentioned that Notre Dame and Louisville were two schools recruiting him hard, but also admitted that just about of the schools he was looking at were also recruiting him hard. Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Duke, Penn State, Louisiana State and Kentucky are a handful of the other schools involved with Gordon. Gordon reportedly has offers from every one of those schools.
So what is Gordon looking for in a school?
"Academics, that comes first. (A school) where the coaches stress academics, a school where I can depend on my coaches on and off the field," Gordon said.
SMITTY'S TAKE - I did not even ask Gordon who his leader was. It was not necessary. It was blatantly obvious that he has Notre Dame on the brain, if you will. Louisville is probably the biggest competition right now.
Adding to the good news is the fact that Gordon plans to take an unofficial visit to Notre Dame when he has an opportunity. That is a good sign for Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis and the assistant coaching staff.
