Sergio Brown (6-2, 190) has kind of snuck up on everyone. His named wasn't mentioned among the early prospects that Notre Dame was pursuing, but that changed immediately when the Irish staff watched him work out at one of the summer combines. I recently spoke with Scout.com's No. 8 rated safety to find out when he was going to plan his official visits.
"I plan on setting them up soon," said Brown. "I'm going to UCLA, Nebraska and Minnesota for sure. I don't know about the others. I'm going to use up all five though."
Conspicuously missing from his list are two schools that have been among his leaders, Illinois and Notre Dame.
"I don't think I'm going to take one," Brown said about his plans for attending South Bend for an official visit. "I don't think I'll have to take a visit to Notre Dame, I've seen that a couple times.
"I don't think I'll have to take a visit to Illinois either, because I've been there a couple times, too. I guess if I don't add any other visits then I'll take visits to them (Notre Dame and Illinois)," he added.
The Notre Dame staff has been very successful thus far in securing commitments from 12 of their top prospects. They have been successful because they have worked tirelessly. But as the start of the football season nears, communication between coaches and prospects tends to slow down quite a bit. Not so with this staff as Sergio said that he's been in touch with both coach Ianello and coach Weis.
"I've talked with coach Ianello and coach Weis, Brown said. "Coach Weis has been text messaging me also."
Comments: It's interesting that Brown isn't going to take an official visit to Illinois and Notre Dame, two of his top schools. Recruits will often use the official visit as the last reference point when comparing schools. Brown did say that he intended on making a decision before the end of his season, so we'll check back with Brown to see when he plans on taking his official visits.
