Like a lot of high school football recruits, Terrence Austin has been keeping a close eye on the progress of Charlie Weis and his football team. With two impressive wins to start the season, Weis is starting to make believers out of a lot of people.
"I watched them against Michigan and Pittsburgh, they looked really good," said Austin. "Charlie Weis is running that program with an iron fist and that's a good thing. They're looking real good.
"Offensively they've been able to get the ball to each and every guy in the passing game. I think they've looked good, and I think they have real good receivers. That's definitely my type of offense.
"The running game is looking real good because of the back (Darius Walker) they have, and he's a good receiver too. He can receive and he can run. They have a lot of weapons on offense and they're using all of them.
"The quarterback (Brady Quinn) they have is excellent," he added.
While the Notre Dame staff has been successful on the field, it's important for the staff to keep the recruiting momentum moving forward. Austin had tentatively set up an official visit to Notre Dame in October, so I asked him if the Irish staff had been in contact to confirm his visit date.
"Yeah we made sure it was etched in stone, so I'll be out there the 15th (October)," he replied.
"They've been calling me every week and keeping up on the updates on how I've been doing. We've talked about how much progress they've been making."
Notre Dame isn't alone in it's pursuit of Austin, and it's possible that another major offer may be on it's way.
"ND, UCLA, Oregon, Cal and Miami," Austin said naming the schools he is most interested in. "Miami just asked for my transcripts yesterday. I'm not sure if they're going to offer, but usually when they ask for the transcripts that's when it usually happens."
Comment: Notre Dame is keeping very close tabs on Austin. He is still looking at a number of schools, and Miami will be an intriguing option for him if they offer, but I like the position the Irish are in right now. Austin has been impressed with the progress the Irish have made under Charlie Weis. If Notre Dame keeps the momentum moving forward, they just might have a shot at pulling this kid from California.
