Kates Visits Notre Dame

Defensive Tackle Jason Kates took an unofficial visit for the Michigan State game this past weekend. He was one of many high profile recruits to see their first game at Notre Dame Stadium. What was Jason's impression of the game day atmosphere?

Just after Bishop McDevitt high school (Harrisburg, Pa.) finished off their opponent Friday night, Jason Kates jumped into a car and made eight-hour drive to South Bend for an unofficial visit to Notre Dame.

"I got up there before all the other recruits so I got more time to hang around," said Kates. "I basically hung around coach Latina and coach Oliver. I talked to coach Ianello and coach Haywood. Everything was good.

"Everything was real nice. Even though they lost, everything was real good. All the fans, everything was great," he said of his visit to South Bend.

While the Irish didn't win, they did put up 41 points. Traditionally after an Irish score, the student body will lift students in the air to do pushups. I asked Jason if the students were able to talk him into tackling the challenge.

"They tried," he said of the effort by the Notre Dame student body. "But there was no way I was going to let them do that. They did get one big guy up there but they didn't do real well with him, so there was no way I was going up there.

There were a number of recruits at the game, I asked Jason if he met any recruits that stuck out.

"I met James Aldridge, Demetrius Jones," he replied. "The big offensive lineman from Ohio, Aaron Brown and the offensive lineman from Virginia, Alex Stadler. They were all cool."

With the football season moving on, most recruits starts scheduling their official visits; when will Kates start to organize his trips?

"I haven't even thought about that," he said. "I'm just trying to play my season, but I'll start thinking about that soon.

Comments: It was great to see Jason make the trip to see a game. He sounded like he had a great time and he sounded like he enjoyed the time he spent with the other recruits. While rumors continue to circulate that he has already committed to Notre Dame, he is continues to deny that a decision has been made and he says that he will take other visits.
