Alex Stadler wasn't a name on Notre Dame's recruiting radar until later on in the summer. Some top rated players are turned off by the lack of early interest by a school, but Alex isn't the type kid to be offended by such things.
"I realize there are different periods of evaluations and they (Notre Dame coaches) were upfront and honest with me and I respected that," he explained.
"If I go there I'll get a great education and I'll get to play football as well," he replied when asked what attracted him to Notre Dame.
"When I was growing up I'd watch Notre Dame and watched Rudy with my dad so I expected a lot (of the campus) because of what I had seen from the movie and all. When I went down there everything was amazing; the aesthetic qualities of the campus – it was just gorgeous. Everything was amazing; the game day atmosphere and the tradition that they have was awesome."
The loss to Michigan State won't sit well with Charlie Weis, but the way the his team handled themselves during the game and after the loss made a positive impression on Alex.
"Coach Weis said to me when I got a chance to talk to him, he said his son asked him if the loss was going to hurt recruiting. I told him it would probably strengthen it because I saw how the team never gave up. They were down 21 points and they rallied around each other and then how fans were all there after the game – it was pretty good," Stadler explained.
Alex was also impressed with the fans at Notre Dame stadium, and he seemed to fit right in with the student body as they hoisted him up for push-ups after an Irish touchdown.
"We really didn't sit down the entire game, and with 83,000 people it got pretty loud," he said. "They (the students) lifted me up 31 time. I was a little nervous that they might drop me when I started leaning to my right, but if I was going to fall I was going to fall on them."
Comments: Alex will take an official visit to Virginia Tech next weekend and Alabama the following weekend. You don't find Notre Dame going up against Virginia Tech and Alabama very often in recruiting, but it looks like it could come down to those schools. Stadler had a great visit at Notre Dame, so they should have a very good chance at landing him. If he isn't ready to decide after his third visit he may schedule two more.
