Texas Wide Receiver Has Total Package

Junior wide receiver Terrance Toliver of Hempstead high school (Texas) has the ability to take over a football game. Hempstead head coach, Ricky Sargent thinks that Toliver is a player that only comes along once in a lifetime.

Charlie Weis seemed to enjoy the height advantage Notre Dame receivers had in 2006. Maurice Stovall will graduate in May and Jeff Samardzija will do so after the 2007 season. If Weis would like to add some height to the Irish receiving corps, Hempstead head coach Ricky Sargent believes Terrance Toliver (6-4, 180-pounds) has the ability to be one of the best.

"He's one of those special kids," coach Sargent said of Toliver. "He's one of those kids that you may coach in your lifetime and you may not. He has the ability to take it to the end zone at any point, whether it's a punt return, kick-off return or receiving. He's a tremendous talent, he has a great work ethic and he's just a great kid. I can't keep him off the field. He's special in so many ways."

Elite high school athletes can play a number of positions once they reach college, but coach Sargent believes Toliver will remain at receiver.

"Most definitely wide receiver," coach Sargent replied when asked which position he thought Terrance would play in college. "He has tremendous body control – body control is a major plus for him. One of the biggest things I admire about him is that he doesn't mind going across the middle. He doesn't mind catching the slant or middle screen.

"This kid has the size, speed and the talent. He has the moves of a really good running back. Those intangibles that you can't coach – it's the natural ability that he has is what makes him special."

Notre Dame needs to cover a lot of territory because the Irish staff recruits nationally, but they have already identified Toliver as a player that they will target.

"Your offensive coordinator, coach Haywood, pretty much spent a day with me," coach Sargent said. "He likes the kid. I tell you everyone from around the country has been in contact with me or come by. There's a coach coming by today.

"There are a lot of major university's that are taking interest in him. He's got an open mind, and the ultimate decision will be his. I've told him to take visits, see how you like the place and the people."

As a junior, Toliver had 552 yards receiving and six touchdowns. Coach Sargent list Toliver with a 4.5-forty.
