Saint Augustine high school in San Diego, CA is home of one the top quarterbacks in the country and top targets for Notre Dame recruiting. Richard Kovalcheck is a 6-3 205 pound QB that is drawing all kinds of attention from schools all over the country. Kovalcheck only played in 7 games last year and threw for over 2000 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Kovalcheck has offers so far from San Diego State, Oregon State, Arizona, Arizona State, Michigan State, Kansas, Colorado, Botson College and Texas A&M. Miami, Stanford, Oregon and Cal have stopped by his highschool and Michigan State, Colorado, USC, Oregon State and Purdue have called him. Richard said he is weighing his options right now and might decide to attend a camp or two this summer.
Richard did talk about some of the schools he is interested in right now. "I haven't narrowed anything down really but Notre Dame, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Miami, USC, Arizona State, Arizona and Oregon State would be the top schools I am interested in."
Kovalcheck also talked about what was important to him when he looks for the right school. "I want to find a school where I would be happy if I didn't play football. The coaching staff stability is important to me. The education is also very important. I will look at the offensive scheme and see if I fit in there and I just want to feel like I fit in there."
Kovalcheck is set academically with a core of 3.7 and a 1220 SAT. He did say that distance is not a problem for him. Kovalcheck is coming off a ACL injury and that seems to be the only question with him. "My knee is fine. I feel great and I am ready for this next season."
I asked Richard which teams he followed in college. "I watched mainly Notre Dame, the Washington Huskies and I really like the Canes." Richard did say he considered himself a "big town" guy so that might be a factor for Notre Dame.
Comments: I think Notre Dame has a legit shot with Richard. He doesn't seem tied to the west coast at this point. He does want to play early and at Notre Dame, he will have a shot to play early. I think he would fit in well socially as well. I expect Notre Dame to recruit him very hard.
