CB Donte Whitner hails from Glenville high school in Cleveland, OH. He plays free safety in high school but everyone is recruiting him to play corner. At 6-0 178 pounds, Whitner had 73 tackles, 3 interceptions (2 returned for touchdowns), 19 pass deflections and 6 forced fumbles. He has personal bests of 10.4 and 21.4 in the 100 and 200 meters.
Donte also plays a little offense and had 17 touchdowns in 5 games rushing for 840 yards. His only reception this year was a 47 yard touchdown.
Donte has 37 offers so far. I asked him to list some of the major schools that have offered him. "I can't remember them all and I don't have my list here but Maryland, Virginia, Duke, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Southern Cal, Florida, Purdue, Pittsburgh, Iowa, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Boston College and Indiana are some of them."
Donte has schedule many visits to school over the summer and plans to attend 17 1 day camps. "I am going to be busy, I am going to see Toledo, Bowling Green, Maryland, Virginia, Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Vandy, Tennessee, Michigan, Notre Dame, Illinois, Ohio State and Penn State at one day camps this summer. I might squeeze a few more in along the way.
I told Donte that I heard this will likely come down to a Ohio State/Michigan battle. "No, not at all. I am really wide open right now. They are two schools I am interested in but nobody leads right now."
Whitner has a 2.9 core g.p.a. and took his first test on April 6th and is waiting for that score to arrive. He said he will likely make a late decision and take all of his visits. I asked Donte what was important to him. "I want to be in a family atmosphere. Tradition is also important as is the graduation rate. The coaches are also important. I want to know they are interested in me academically as much as a football player.
Comments: I think Notre Dame has a legit shot with Donte as well. Donte is the kind of kid that seems to be very serious about his future. He has everything already planned out as to how he will tackle recruiting. I think he is going to be very impressed by coach Willingham and I think Willingham will be very impressed with him. He did say his Mom favors Ohio State. Can ND overcome Ohio State?
