After a short respite after signing day, the Irish staff is once again on the recruiting trail, and the priorities for the Irish recruiting class are starting to take shape. Marvin Austin (6-2, 292 pounds) recently spoke with Charlie Weis and he found out that he is one of Notre Dame's top guys.
"Yeah, actually I called coach Weis up and he offered me a scholarship," Austin responded when asked if he had spoken with the Notre Dame coaches. "I was ecstatic about that. It was the highlight of my day, my week, my whole month probably.
"That was my first time talking to him. It was good talking to him. It was good picking his brain a little bit. We had a nice conversation. He's a football guy. He's been doing this for a long time. He's been to the Super Bowl, so he's been to the highest level.
"He's a real easy going person," Austin continued. "I liked him, he seemed like a cool down to earth guy. He said he wants good people and I'm a high character guy. Coach Weis said he liked my attitude. It was nice talking to him.
"He sent me a text saying that he was having another junior day. I don't if I'm going to be able to make. I've going to see if I can work it out."
Notre Dame wasn't the only school to extend a scholarship offer to Austin. Three of the top SEC schools also reached the standout defensive tackle.
Austin's offer list exceeds twenty schools at this time. In addition to those mentioned above, he also has Penn State, Maryland, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Louisville, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina State and Illinois.
The competition for Austin's signature will be tough to navigate, but the Irish are currently in a strong position.
"They're one of the top schools right now," Austin said of the Irish. "It's Notre Dame. Right now I'm just taking in all my offers. Toward the end of the summer I'll cut it down to a certain number of schools that I'm thinking about. Notre Dame will be one of those top schools."
