Blackwell is Taking His Time Top-100 defensive tackle prospect Will Blackwell of West Monroe high school (La.) has a strong list of early offers, but he's willing to wait awhile before he makes a decision.

LSU, Auburn, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Arkansas have already offered Will Blackwell (6-4, 290-pounds) a scholarship. Notre Dame has started to take interest in him and he would like to hear more from the Irish.

"They have been in contact, but not as much as I'd like," Blackwell replied when asked if Notre Dame was recruiting him. "I grew up a Notre Dame fan. It's always had a great tradition. It would be nice to pick up an offer before the season started.

"They have been in touch through mail. I haven't talked to anyone. They're in the quiet period so they can't call. They have called my head coach and they wanted to set up a visit. My grandfather is the defensive coordinator. He and my head coach are buddies and he said they [Notre Dame] wanted to set up a visit.

"They're [his coaches] going to try and keep me protected and keep me safe," Blackwell continued. "Right now we're not looking to make a decision. We're trying to play it cool and see who all we can stay in contact with. I should probably give Notre Dame a call in the next couple weeks.

"I believe in myself and I believe I have the capability to get an offer from Notre Dame. I haven't been in touch with them enough to get an offer. We sent film. I've been academically qualified...I have good grades, so all that is in my favor."

Blackwell has more than good grades going for him. He's a big guy that has the ability to dominate up front.

"I'm the big guy on the defensive line. I'm the run stuffing guy," Blackwell explained. "That's basically what I do. I'm the wide body. I've got good technique. My grandfather has taught me since day one – technique, technique. They drill us every day on technique. I'm more the technician. I think I do a good job of putting myself in the right place.

"My grandfather has coached in high school, college…ever since my mother was born. It's in my blood. It's all I've ever known. Of course I have three other guy on my team that are going to play Division I football and that's not hurting me any; Luther Davis, linebacker, C.C. Carpenter, and defensive back Terry Carter. Opponents fear them. We play well together."

As Blackwell had mentioned, Notre Dame is a school he rooted for, but like most young kids that grow up in Louisiana, Blackwell is a big LSU tiger fan. In the end it might be difficult for the Irish to pull the big man from the bayou.

"That's exactly right and that's the one problem." Blackwell responded when it was pointed out that Notre Dame was the only school in the North that he was taking a hard look at. "I'm a family guy I want my family there to watch me play. That will factor into the decision. But if it's somewhere I really like my family will support me.

"I'm going to take all my visits and I'll take my visits to schools I've never been to. I don't want to rush anything."

Blackwell had 80 tackles and eight sacks for the season.
