Clayton Richard is 6-5 223 pounds and has a cannon for an arm. He is also a baseball prospect with a mid 90's fastball and he will be playing baseball most of the summer. The Lafayette, IN QB has thrown for 7700 yeards and 67 touchdowns in his career and has a chance to be the first QB to named all-state all four years of his high school career.
Richard obviously has a lot of tools and options. I talked to his Dad Barry about his situation. "Clayton is a good kid. He is an honors student with a 4.0 and scored a 1340 SAT. I think the coaches are really going to be impressed with his character."
Many coaches already have been impressed. He has offers from Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Michigan, Colorado, UCLA, Michigan State, LSU and Stanford. "Right now, I would say Clayton is really happy with anyone who has offered. He is just going to concentrate on those that have offered him."
I asked Barry if he and Clayton had gone on some unofficial visits to see schools. "Clayton can't really go to many camps because of baseball. He is going to the Elite 11 camp. We have been on unofficial visits to Michigan, Illinois, Purdue, Notre Dame and Indiana." I asked Barry if ND offered. He had this to say. "Notre Dame didn't offer. It was just a chance to sit down and talk to the coaches and see the facilities."
Barry said his son wants to play basbeall in college as well and all schools that have offered have said he can play baseball as well. Barry did say a lot of pro scouts are telling him that Clayton could be a first round pick next year and would have been this year if he were draft eligible.
I asked Barry about Clayton's decision. "Distance isn't a concern. Clayton wants to go to a school that will offer him a good education and the chance to play to prepare him to play as a professional. He hasn't narrowed anything down yet. Anyone who has offered is being considered."
Comments. In talking with Barry, you can tell that Clayton is a good kid. He is a volunteer for DARE and goes to grade schools to speak to kids about staying away from drugs. Notre Dame hasn't offered and I am not sure they can get in this race if they do. A great kid and one in their back yard. I am going to guess the possible 1st round pick in baseball might be a factor.
