Martez Wilson (6-4, 235-pounds) seems to most as a pretty well kept secret, but the Notre Dame coaching staff has known about him for some time. The Irish coaches stumbled on him while watching their future quarterback, Demetrius Jones, run for his life last fall.
"I think Notre Dame started recruiting me the first time we played Morgan Park,"" responded Wilson when the Irish staff first contacted him. "I was doing real good. I think I had four sacks the first time we played them and then one in the championship game. I think they liked the way I played and they started sending me letters. They had invited me to the Syracuse game last year, but that was the same day as the championship game. And then Coach Ianello came to our school this year."
Although Wilson wasn't able to make it to a game last season, he did take advantage of his invitation to visit South Bend last weekend for the 77th annual Blue-Gold Football game.
"When I was up there Saturday their fans showed me a lot of love, I liked that," Wilson said "I met Charlie Weis and all the coaches. He's a real good guy. He's got a sense of humor and he isn't uptight. I liked that. I thought he was going to be a little more serious. He told me there were recruiting me as an outside linebacker. I like both sides of the ball -- they're both fun. I'll probably be a defensive player in college though."
Although Wilson made his first trip to South Bend, he has does know quite a bit about Notre Dame.
"I know Notre Dame has good academics," responded Wilson when asked about his knowledge of Notre Dame. "I know if I didn't make it in the NFL, I'd have the degree, because they have a good graduation rate. I know they have a good football team. They have good alumni. They have a lot of players that are in the NFL, plus I love their fan support."
Wilson currently has offers from Northern Illinois, Purdue, Kansas State, and Illinois. Expect that list to grow as Wilson hits the combines.
"I'll be there this weekend for the combine," Wilson said of his plans to attend the Adidas combine in South Bend. "I think they're waiting to offer until they see me run at the combine. I think they'll offer though.
"Right now I'm interested in Illinois, Kansas State, and if Notre Dame offered they'd be at the top of my list. Iowa, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Wisconsin and Michigan State are recruiting me. I get a bunch of letters, but I can't think of all the others."
As a junior Wilson registered 99 tackles, 25 for loss, 18 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two sacks. On offense, he had 14 receptions and five touchdowns.
