Irish Interested in Matthews

Jimmy Clausen and Marc Tyler aren't the only players Notre Dame is looking to recruit from Oaks Christian high school (Westlake Village, Calif.) Linebacker Casey Matthews is starting to pile up significant scholarship offers and he was invited to attend Notre Dame's junior day for the Blue-Gold Football Game.

Notre Dame hasn't offered many linebackers for the 2007 recruiting class. In fact, there haven't been a lot of names that have surface that the Irish are pursing. Casey Matthews (6-2, 220-pounds) is a player that has emerged and he recently visited South Bend.

"I liked it a lot," Mathews said of his visit to the Irish spring game. "I was very impressed with the coaches, the campus, the facilities and everything. The tradition that they have at Notre Dame is insane. There were 40,000 fans at the spring game, which was incredible.

"I liked the campus a lot. It's definitely a place I'm looking at going to school. USC is in a city and it's compact and Notre Dame is so wide open."

Another thing that is wide open is linebacker recruiting for Notre Dame.

"[Notre Dame] started recruiting me a couple months ago, maybe in March," Matthews explained. "They saw my film and liked it. They wanted to know what my height and weight was, so when I went there I measured in and they like it. They said on May 11 that they're going to come out and by May 15 I should know something. I'm not sure, but I hope it pulls through because I'd be very interested in them.

"When I met coach Weis he said my dad was a real player. He's a good man and he definitely knows what he's doing and he turned the program around in a year. They're definitely a team on the rise."

Matthews currently has scholarship offers from Oregon, Arizona, State, Utah, Georgia Tech, and Tennessee. Casey recently visited two of the schools he is considering.

"I visited Georgia Tech this weekend," Matthews said. "I liked it a lot, because I used to live there. I liked how it was in the middle of everything. They've been successful the last ten years. They've been to nine straight bowl games and they've finished at the top of the ACC every year.

"I like Tennessee. I've been there a couple times with the Clausens and I went to Oregon in middle of April. I like Oregon. There doesn't seem like there is lot to do there, but there really is, especially if you like the outdoors."

As a junior Mathews registered 132 tackles, 1 sack and four interceptions. Top Stories
