Harrison Smith (6-3, 215-pounds) is an outstanding athlete that does almost everything that his high school team needs him to do. The Irish staff was impressed enough to get in touch and extend a scholarship offer recently to this top prospect.
"I spoke with coach Weis on Sunday and he told me that he was going to offer me," Smith explained about his scholarship offer. "He told me that they were going to offer me a scholarship and they were kind of excited. Obviously he's a very smart coach and he knows what he's doing. When I went up for that visit, it was one of the most organized visits, and that's kind of how I judged that visit. I knew they had their act together so I was impressed by that.
"I've talked to coach Minter before…maybe three or four times. They said safety/linebacker; I think they call it Apache. I want to play safety, so it sounds interesting and I'm interested in finding out more about it."
Smith is interested in finding out more about the Notre Dame campus as well. He did make a trip to South Bend for the Tennessee game last season, but he like to get back on campus.
"I don't know if there's a whole lot they can do really," responded Smith when asked what Notre Dame needed to show him on his next visit to increase his interest in playing for the Irish. "It's really if I feel at home. Obviously they're good at football and that's something I'm going to looking for. After that, they're good academically, but it's if I feel at home. I really didn't see the campus. I just saw some of the facilities and the game, so I'd be interested in seeing more of that."
"This spring I've visited Alabama, Auburn Boston College and Virginia Tech," Smith continued. "I'm going to Stanford in June, and I'll probably go to Notre Dame sometime during the summer."
"After I take my last couple of visits I'll be able to cut it down to a more serious level and I'll be closer to making a decision," Smith explained. "I don't have a timeframe. I wanted to do it before my season started, but if I don't I'll wait until I have a decision."
Besides the Irish, Smith has offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Stanford.
He had over 1,300 yards rushing on 155 attempts and 17 rushing touchdowns. He also had 446 yards receiving and six touchdowns. He added five interceptions defensively for two touchdowns as well.
