Notre Dame is one of a number of schools that is heavily involved in recruiting Will Blackwell (6-foot-4, 290 -pounds). The Irish need to land a big-time player along the defensive line, and Blackwell has a tremendous amount of interest in Notre Dame.
"They're right up there at the top," Blackwell said when asked about his interest in the Irish. "That hasn't changed a bit. I haven't spoken with coach Weis in a couple weeks, but I'll probably give him a call in a couple days and see what's going on.
"Right now I'm trying to get a top five together before the end of the summer so I can make it a little easier on myself. I wouldn't say anybody has the lead, because I can't justify or give anybody a nod without seeing a place without visiting and without knowing anything about a place."
Blackwell hasn't visited Notre Dame yet, but he is starting to make plans to get to South Bend.
"I was talking about taking an unofficial for a game and then coming back in late December or early January for my official visit." Blackwell said of his intentions to visit Notre Dame. "They have Michigan at home. I might try to visit for that game, or I'm might try to wait for the last week of October. We have an off week then and I think they play UCLA.
"I won't be able to make it this summer. I kind of want to see the snow. I've only seen the snow three or four times in my life, and I'd like to see what it's like staying in it for a couple days."
When Will does make his way to South Bend, he expects to see an Irish squad battling for the national championship.
"I see that they're ranked No.1 or No.2 in a bunch of polls," he said. "I think they have a shot. Anytime you have a whole offense coming back you got to have a shot. With the teams that they play they'll definitely be ranked high."
As a junior, Blackwell had 80 tackles and eight sacks.
