Kerry Neal feeling at home

Notre Dame's first commitment for the 2007 recruiting class was defensive end Kerry Neal of Bunn high school (N.C.) Despite the overtures from several top programs since that day, Neal has stayed true to his word.

What took most Irish fans by surprise was that Kerry Neal (6-foot-3, 220 pounds) had not visited Notre Dame prior to his commitment. Neal did take an trip to South Bend with his coach, David Howle, in March, and the pair recently made a return trip earlier this month.

"Yes sir I did," Neal replied when asked if he had made a second trip to Notre Dame. "Me and my coach planned it early during the year. We got in the car one day and left. We got up there when they were having their first camp session. I didn't participate in the camp. I was just running around and talking to the coaches.

"The players weren't really around. They didn't report until that Sunday and I left Saturday morning. I just sat around and got to know the coaches. I talked with coach Oliver and Dave Peloquin was our tour guide around campus."

Neal was probably more relieved that he was comfortable with his decision after making his first trip to South Bend. On this visit he was more at ease with his surroundings.

"This visit made everything feel more like home," Neal explained. "The first time I didn't know what to expect, but this trip I really felt comfortable around the coaches and stuff like that. Now I'm getting used to where everything's at on campus; the cafeteria and some of the buildings."
