Sherrod keeping options open

Notre Dame hasn't offered many offensive lineman this year, but one of the top players that has received an invitation from the Irish is Derek Sherrod of Caledonia high school (Miss.) Sherrod has a brother that is currently on the Mississippi State roster, so it will be a struggle to lure him north.

Despite the obvious connection with the Mississippi program, Derek Sherrod (6-foot-6, 303 pounds) is trying to keep an open mind when it comes to recruiting. Part of his strategy was to get out see Notre Dame during the summer, but it looks as if he'll have to wait to visit South Bend in the fall.

"Nothing much, just the regular routine of working out with the football team," Sherrod responded when asked how he was spending his summer. "I'd have to say the plans to go up to South Bend probably fell through because my parents and I probably don't have the time to travel up there for a weekend.

"The only visit to a school that I'll make will probably be the Mississippi State football camp in late July."

Despite not being able to make an unofficial visit to Notre Dame, Sherrod is still interested in the Irish.

"They're still sending me letters and I talk to coach Parmalee now and then. We keep in touch," Sherrod said. "I'm still very interested in Notre Dame. What high school football player wouldn't be interested in playing for them?"

With the start of football practice looming in the horizon, most recruits begin to narrow their focus on a handful of schools. Derek isn't ready to eliminate anyone just yet, but he is starting to get an idea of which schools might receive his official visits.

"There are a couple schools that I'll have to make sure that I go on my official visits," explained Sherrod. "Mississippi State will be one of the schools that I'll have to go to. I'll have to check Florida out again. Those are a couple that I have intentions of going on, I'll have to check the rest when I talk to my parents about those.

"My options are open right now, but Mississippi State, Florida, Miami, Notre Dame, Mississippi are the schools I'm concentrating on the most right now, but I still get a lot of mail from LSU. I respect them and I look forward to talking with them. I still have a great relationship with the coaches at Louisville, Michigan and Houston. I'm just trying to enjoy it and I'm keeping my options open. I'm having a lot of fun with recruiting. Top Stories
