Hughes discusses Notre Dame visit's No. 17 rated running back Robert Hughes of Hubbard high school (Chicago, Ill.) is one of Notre Dame's top backfield targets for the 2007 recruiting class. The Irish want to regain the recruiting foothold it enjoyed for so many years in Chicago and Hughes is another important recruit toward realizing that goal.

Robert Hughes (5-foot-11, 227 pounds) has made a couple of trips to South Bend, but this trip, during the one of the quietest recruiting periods, might have been the most informative trip he has made.

"I got a chance to see things I wasn't able to see," Hughes explained of his latest visit to the Notre Dame campus. "I got a chance to talk to the coaches and other people, because before there were big events happening and there was always a lot of running around. Yesterday was based just on us and they were able to focus on just us.

"I learned a lot more about the university. I had seen the facilities so I knew what the facilities were like. It was basically just getting a better understanding for the coaching staff and what was going on.

"There were quite a few of the freshman around. I met a few new people, Richard Jackson, Jashaad Gaines, and Toryan Smith," he said.

Robert has had a busy summer visiting schools, but he isn't quite done with his travels.

"I'm going to Illinois this weekend," Hughes said "It'll just be me. I'm going to try to get a better feel I guess and then that will be it [until official visits]."

Hughes will likely visit Notre Dame unofficially for a home game this fall and he will take his official visit on December 1.

In 2005, Robert rushed for 1,920 yards and was named all-state and all-area by several media outlets in the Chicago area. Top Stories
