Wilson Sets visits

Scout.com's No.2 defensive end, Martez Wilson, of Simeon Vocational high school (Chicago, Ill.), is going to be one the most highly coveted prospects in the country. He's a defensive player that has the ability to dominate and disrupt the opposition's offense.

Notre Dame desperately needs a player like Martez Wilson (6-foot-4, 235 pounds) on the defensive side of the ball. He's big enough to play weak-side defensive end and he's mobile enough to play linebacker.

"Every school is recruiting me as a hybrid, either linebacker or defensive end," Wilson responded when asked which position he was being recruited to play. "I'll play a little bit of both depending on the defensive package.

"I'm learning both right now. Last year we played a ‘5-2', so I played a standup defensive end/outside linebacker. At defensive end you get to rush the quarterback more, but with linebacker you're playing the run or dropping into coverage. I like linebacker better because I like standing up."

"I'm also working out at wide receiver, but I'm focusing on defense," he added.

Wilson made his first trip to Notre Dame in April for the spring game. Last weekend he traveled from Chicago to get a more in-depth look at what Notre Dame offers.

"I went over with my uncle Eddy," Wilson explained. "I met the academic director and I got a tour of the campus. I sat down with Charlie Weis, I got to know him a little more. He's cool… I like him.

"I talked to the defensive coordinator, Coach Minter and went over some film. They showed me all the linebackers and what they do. I feel the defense needs a little more help, but they don't have too far to go. I think I'd fit in real good."

There are a lot of people wondering where Wilson will fit in and a lot of them are college recruiters. Martez hasn't eliminated any school at this time, but he does have a few schools that are beginning to standout.

"Ohio State, USC, Tennessee, Iowa, Michigan Notre Dame, Illinois and Wisconsin," Wilson listed as the schools that were starting to separate themselves from the others. "I don't have a top five officially.

"I set visits with Notre Dame (December 1), Illinois (September 23), and Ohio State (December 8)."

As a junior Wilson registered 99 tackles, 25 for loss, 18 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two sacks.

Martez Wilson will be a guest on Power Hour tonight at 8:00 EST
