Irish will get first Barksdale visit

Scout.com's No. 11 rated defensive tackle Joseph Barksdale of Cass Technical high school (Detroit, Mich.) has always been a priority for the Notre Dame staff and now it appears Notre Dame is a priority to Barksdale.

Several months ago Notre Dame would have been fortunate to receive an official visit from Joseph Barksdale (6-foot-4, 310 pounds). Now Notre Dame is the first school he is scheduled to visit.

"I've set my first official visit. It set up a visit to Notre Dame for the Michigan game." Barksdale said of his intentions to visit South Bend for the September 16 contest. "I'm actually going to the Penn State game (September 9) for an unofficial visit, and then I'll be back the next weekend for the Michigan game.

"I've been there before but there wasn't much going on, so I want to see what Notre Dame is like on a game weekend. There are going to be a lot of big names at those games, so I wanted to get a chance to meet some of them.

"Notre Dame has a lot to offer," Barksdale said of his interest in the Irish. "Coach Weis is a great NFL coach. Notre Dame has a great education, and there is an opportunity to play early if you're a defensive lineman."

Barksdale has Notre Dame high on his list of favorites, but there are still a number of schools that he is still considering.

"I don't really have a set group of schools or a top-five yet," Barksdale explained. "Ohio State stands out; USC, Miami, Penn State, Oregon, Tennessee and Florida State. I'm still interested in Texas, but I don't think they'll have a scholarship available when I plan on deciding."

"I still plan on taking all of my visits. I think it's important to make an informed decision and taking my visits will help me do that. I need to sit down with my parents and start scheduling them though. I've been really busy, but I have to make time and get everything sorted out."
