Hughes will watch Irish this weekend's No. 17 rated running back Robert Hughes of Hubbard high school (Chicago, Ill.) has emerge as one of Notre Dame's top targets at running back for the 2007 recruiting class and Hughes appears to like the Irish quite a bit.

Notre Dame opened the season by squirming past Georgia Tech last Saturday, but Robert Hughes (5-foot-11, 227 pounds) missed the 14-10 Irish victory. That won't happen this weekend, as Hughes will make another unofficial visit to South Bend to watch the Irish take on Penn State.

"I didn't get a chance to see them last week, but I will this weekend," Hughes said of his plans to attend the Notre Dame-Penn State game. "I'm going with my mom and a couple of players. We're going to check out the game and show my mom around. My mom's never been."

Although Hughes didn't get a chance to see Notre Dame last weekend, he did watch the defensive battle between Miami and Florida State.

"I caught the Florida State-Miami game this weekend," Hughes said. "That was a great game. That was great defense. That's how football is played. I think the total rushing yardage came out to three yards."

Robert enjoyed that game, but when he's playing he prefers to have blockers in front of him that can open some holes. After dropping the season opener, Hughes and his Hubbard teammates bounced back to get the first victory of the season.

"We beat Hope 39-0," Hughes explained. "I really didn't play that much. I had five carries for 38 yards. I had two catches for 80 yards. I had two receiving touchdowns and one rushing. We play Rock Island Friday night." Top Stories
