Jason Peters (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) is a name Irish recruiting fans haven't heard much about, but it might be a good idea for them to start keeping tabs on him, because the Notre Dame staff has been.
"It's picked up recently within the last few weeks," Peters replied when asked about Notre Dame's interest in him. "I've been getting mail from them for a month or so. The heavy recruiting has just picked up. I've talked to coach Haywood. I was told by a friend of mine that he used to coach at LSU. That's kind of cool to see an old LSU guy come back and recruit this area.
"I've also talked to coach Weis. He just let me know that they offered me a scholarship and that they think I'm a good fit for the school. It's an honor that Notre Dame offered me a scholarship and I look at it, as there's another great school that wants me to come play for them.
"I know it's a very prestigious school," he said. "I know that they have great academics and great football. That's what makes it such a big honor to be offered by Notre Dame. I also have to take it in stride. Now that they've offered, it doesn't change anything. They become part of the process with the other schools that have taken an interest in me. They're part of the process of building a relationship between myself, the coaches and the school.
"I need to gather more information about [Notre Dame]. I need to find out as much information about them, like I'm doing with the other schools, so I can make a better decision when the time comes."Although it is fairly late in the recruiting game, Peters hasn't become overly involved in the process.
"I'm not sure about my official visits at this time," Peters said. "I'm going to take my official visits after my season. I'm just trying to focus on school and winning a state championship.
"As far as schools that I'm interested in, the ones that I'm kind of leaning towards would be LSU, Georgia Tech, Florida, Stanford, Nebraska, Tennessee and Notre Dame. They're recruiting me at defensive end.
Notre Dame has a huge need along the defensive line, but that isn't going to give Notre Dame an edge with Jason.
"Playing early isn't one of the biggest issues that I'm considering. It's just not a big deal to me," Peters explained. "I don't think that's something that I should base my decision off of. It just isn't something that I'm considering. I'm looking at the school and the overall program itself.
"I need to find out a lot more about Notre Dame. I think they have a real good program and they have a really good-looking future," he added.
