May 4, 2002 – Midwest Recruiting & Film Evaluation Reported

One of the top wide receiver prospects in the Midwest is Valparaiso, Indiana's Jeff Samardzija. The speedy wide receiver has been compared to former Penn State and current Tampa Bay Buccaneer wide receiver Joe Jurevicius.

Samardzija stands 6-foot-4 and he weighs 191-pounds. Jeff will be a four-year starter in 2002. As a junior he had 51 catches for 1,197 yards and 11 touchdowns. Several schools have been in contact.

"Purdue and Indiana have offered a scholarship." Samardzija said. "Illinois said they are very close to offering. Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State, Northwestern, Missouri, Tennessee and USC have all been in contact.

"If I had to pick an some early favorites, I'd say that Notre Dame, Purdue, Ohio State, Wisconsin and USC would be at the top of my list.

Samardzija attended the Notre Dame and Purdue spring games. Jeff also had five interceptions as a defensive back and ran three back for touchdowns.

"I verbally committed to Notre Dame." Jeff Samardzija said. "Too me, Notre Dame just seemed a step up from everything else I saw out there.

"I like the coaching staff and the team. They made me feel at home and included me in meetings and stuff like that.

"I grew up a Notre Dame fan, so that made it a lot easier on me. Purdue came in a close second."

Jeff Samardzija is a fantastic football player. He's extremely smooth and everything looks so effortless when you watch him perform.

I'll be making the trip to Valparaiso to check out Samardzija in action when they Portage near the end of the season.

The Fighting Irish are getting a good one and the future at the wide receiver position looks brighter every day. McKnight, Stovall, Ndukwe and now Samardzija.
