Irish still in the Mix for Smith

Notre Dame hasn't pursued a lot of prospects from California this year, but one player the Irish would still like to add to the 2007 recruiting class is Malcolm Smith of Taft high school (Woodland Hills, Calif.)

Notre Dame will have a difficult challenge to convincing Malcolm Smith (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) to play his football in South Bend, but as of now the Irish are hanging in with two top PAC-10 schools.

"As the season goes along schools are starting to separate themselves…definitely," Smith responded when asked if he has started to narrow down his list of college options. "UCLA, USC and Notre Dame are in front and then I'd say Penn State and Cal are right there.

"Those schools are just recruiting me the best and I've been in contact with those schools the most. UCLA and USC are obviously local schools, but Notre Dame does a real good job of keeping up with me.

"[Notre Dame's] academics and tradition are great. They have a great football program," Smith said.

Malcolm visited Notre Dame for the Michigan game, but he hasn't been able to lock into any other visits.

"I really don't have any other visits scheduled," Smith explained. "I want to go to Cal and Penn State for sure. I probably won't take an official to UCLA or USC." Top Stories
