Kevin Murphy (6-foot-7, 240 pounds) felt he would be a solid football prospect, but he didn't expect to receive the recruiting attention that he has this early in the process.
"I get a lot of stuff from Washington State, Boston College, Duke, Arizona State, Cal, and Notre Dame," Murphy responded when asked to name the schools that have been recruiting him. "I'm not sure how they found out about me. Maybe it's my coach sending our info to schools. Ever since I received my first letter I've wondered, ‘how does a school like Notre Dame find out about Kevin Murphy?'"
Although Murphy can't put his finger on the ‘how', he does have an idea of what makes him an attractive prospect for top Division I prospects.
"My size," Murphy explained. "I'm really tall and pretty strong. I fire off the ball real well. I can pull and move around really well. I'm pretty quick for a lineman. I can play either offensive tackle or tight end.
"I played tight end my entire life, but our offense doesn't have a tight end so they moved me to tackle. It was real hard on me last year, but I understand what's best for the team. I realize that we don't have a tight end, so I'll play where I can help the team the most, if that's at tackle, then that's at tackle.
"Playing tight end and offensive tackle is pretty much the same, because the blocking is pretty much the same," Murphy said. "The only difference is going out and catching the ball. I think I'm athletic enough that I think I could play tight end again, but it doesn't matter. It's just the opportunity, if I get lucky enough to go anywhere, I'll be happy to play wherever they need me."
