Junior Running Back Loading up on Offers

Darrell Scott of Moorpark High School (Calif.) is already emerging as one of the top running backs for the 2008 recruiting class. He has size and speed, as well as a bushel of scholarship offers from top programs.

For most high school football prospects it takes a time for the recruiting buzz to start. For Darrell Scott (6-foot-1, 205 pounds) it didn't wait. As soon as his junior season began college coaches from around the country started taking notice.

"I think it started when USC came to one of our practices," Scott said of the recruiting attention. "Pete Carroll was there with Steve Sarkisian. They liked me and said that they wanted to offer me a scholarship.

"I have 18 scholarship offers. The ones I can remember are USC, Michigan, Arizona State, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, Cal, Colorado, Ole Miss. UCLA, just offered, and Florida and Florida State said they are about to offer."

Scott hasn't received an offer from Notre Dame, but the Irish are aware of his talent.

"Notre Dame is recruiting me," Scott replied when asked if the Irish had been in contact with him. "They've been sending me letters. Coach Weis has sent me a hand-written letter.

"I know they have a lot of tradition and good academics. Their running back gets a lot of touches and he's a great athlete. I like it."

Scott is going to keep his options open and there are other offenses that have grabbed his attention.

"USC has so much talent, but I like them," Scott explained. "I like how Florida has a balanced offense. After Leak graduates I think they're going to recruit a pretty good running back. I think they'll use [Tim] Tebow and the running back and put in the option, which will be pretty nice.

"I like Texas, and Clemson. I definitely like Florida State and how they use their running backs."

"I'll definitely look at the offense. I'd prefer the offense to be balanced, but if a team has to pass a little more that's fine. As long as we get the ‘W' at the end of the game that's all that matters."

Scott has rushed for over 2,000 yards and has scored 28 touchdowns in nine games.
