Irish Make Move On Goodman

Attending junior days at Notre Dame does pay dividends. Wide receiver John Goodman from Bishop Dwenger High School (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is the latest prospect to receive a scholarship offer from those that attended the January 24 Notre Dame junior day.

John Goodman (6-foot-4, 185 pounds) had an impressive performance at the U.S. Army National Combine. He was hoping his efforts against top competition would validate is abilities as an elite wide receiver. His work and patience seem to be paying off as Goodman just received another big scholarship offer...this one from Notre Dame.

"Coach Ianello sent me a text message [Friday] that said, 'Call coach Weis'," Goodman explained of the events leading up to receiving his scholarship offer. "This was right before a basketball practice, so I had to tell him that I'd call coach Weis later.

"I was thinking about [the call] all basketball practice. I was hyped the whole practice, it was intense. I had in my mind what was gong to happen, but I wasn't certain."

After a two and a half hour practice Goodman finally reached the Notre Dame head coach.

"Coach Weis was talking to me and my adrenaline was going crazy," Goodman recalled. "We talked a bit and he said he liked how I played and that he thought that I was what they were looking for in a receiver. He said that I'm the type of player that that they wanted at Notre Dame and that's when he extended the offer to me. I didn't know what to saw. It's an honor. I just thanked him. I really just didn't know what to say.

"They had been talking about offering me for a while, but I didn't expect an offer this soon. I didn't even know it was going to happen. I was just hopeful and it finally did happen and it's unbelievable. I was speechless. Growing up a Notre Dame fan, my whole family loves Notre Dame, my whole school [loves Notre Dame]; Bishop Dwenger a Catholic school and we're only an hour and a half away from Notre Dame. This just never happens and to be the one that it happens to is just unbelievable."

Ball State, Purdue, Michigan Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky had previously offered Goodman and despite his excitement over receiving an offer from Notre Dame, John will take some time to allow everything to sink in.

"The thought [of committing] did run through my mind, but I have too much to think about," Goodman explained. "I just wasn't ready for it and I have a lot of thinking to do. I like Michigan. I really like the campus. I've seen what Michigan has to offer, so there is a lot to think about right now.

"I'm going back to Notre Dame [this] weekend for the junior day with my parents. Last week coach Ianello said that he wanted to get a chance for all of us to get to know each other better."

Last season, Goodman had 44 receptions for approximately 860 yards (19.5 avg.) with 9 touchdowns.
