McCarthy Impressed With Irish DC

Notre Dame has a lot of young depth at the safety position, so the coaching staff will be very selective when they extend scholarship offers to safety prospects this year. One prospect the Irish are going to target is Dan McCarthy out of Cardinal Mooney High School (Ohio). Irish fans should be familiar with the name, because Dan is the younger brother of current Irish safety, Kyle McCarthy.

There are a number of talented safety prospects in the 2008 recruiting class, but Notre Dame will only take one this year. One of their top choices appears to be Dan McCarthy. Last Friday Charlie Weis informed Dan that he had a scholarship offer waiting for him when he arrived for the Notre Dame junior day that was being held on March 4.

"I was definitely very excited to get the offer," McCarthy responded when asked about receiving word of his scholarship offer. "I spoke with coach Weis in his office with my parents before the junior day started. He was straight up with me and I like that. He told me that they were very interested in me and that they were only going after one safety.

"He didn't pressure me to commit. He wants me to be sure of my decision. I respect that, so we'll see how it goes. It was good to get his opinion on things and to find out where I stand."

Because his older brother is currently playing at Notre Dame, Dan knew what to expect during the junior day activities.

"I've been up to Notre Dame a number of times, probably ten times, but it was good to get up there and meet with the coaches," McCarthy said. "I'm pretty familiar with the campus and all that. I kind of sat back and let other people ask the questions. I've heard a lot of that stuff from my brother so I was familiar with the lifestyle and with what was going on [with the football program]. What I was excited about was the behind the scenes stuff.

"I spoke with the defensive coaches one-on-one. I spoke with coach Lewis and coach Brown. They were excited for me. They think that I can fit into their schemes, and that I could do a lot of good things in it.

"I was very impressed with the new defensive coordinator, coach Brown. It seems like he really knows his stuff. He explained the new ‘3-4' defense that they're moving to. Coach Brown showed us some film on what they were going to do. It's a lot like our high school's defense, so I was very familiar with a lot of the terms he was using."

McCarthy has offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Indiana and Akron. Although he has strong ties to Notre Dame, he is going to take his time before making his decision.

"It's not like I'm taking any other offers right now," McCarthy replied when asked about the timing of his decision. "I'm really just trying to sort everything out. I'm trying to find out what the best thing for me would be. I'm hoping to commit before my senior season. That's my goal, but if it doesn't work out, I'll make my choice during the season.

"[Notre Dame] is definitely at the top of my list, but I'm definitely interested in other schools as well. I'm going to look at all of my options. Florida has been in contact with me and I think they're a great school. Boston College, and Penn State are a couple schools that have been recruiting me that haven't offered. I'm still keeping my options open and trying to find the best fit." Top Stories
