Irish Surprise Fletcher

Ohio State generally has a stranglehold on Glenville High School (Cleveland, Ohio), but Notre Dame is interested in one of their top junior prospects, cornerback Donnie Fletcher. Fletcher recently popped up on Notre Dame's radar and the standout athlete made to it South Bend for the March 4 junior day.

Donnie Fletcher (6-foot-0, 170 pounds) was surprised by Notre Dame's interest in him, but that didn't prevent him from making last minute plans to visit Notre Dame for their recent junior day.

"I really didn't know they had any interest, because I didn't have any contact with them," Fletcher responded when asked about the events leading up to his Notre Dame visit. "They called coach Ginn and told him that they wanted me to come to their junior day, so we went. I liked it a lot and it seems like they're really interested in me now. Coach Brown has been texting me almost everyday since.

"As soon as I walked in they knew who I was. I liked that. I got to talk to coach Lewis one-on-one. Later on in the day I got to talk to coach Brown one-on-one. Most of the day I was with coach Brown and coach Lewis. I expected a little one-on-one, but I didn't expect as much as I got."

Not only was Fletcher surprised by the personal attention the Notre Dame staff showed him, he was also surprised by how comfortable he felt on the Notre Dame campus.

"I'm really interested in them," Fletcher said of his interest in the Irish. "I'm real comfortable there. I think it's a good fit for me. I think the whole atmosphere at Notre Dame fits me. It feels like another home.

"I like the their style of coaching at Notre Dame. I was kind of surprised though. When I thought about it before the junior day, I thought their style would be a little different. I thought it would be laid back, but they're real intense. They have a real intense coaching staff. I like that, because it gets you ready to play. I think I could fit in real good there.

"When we were in the position meetings coach Lewis told us the type of defense that they run and I think it fits my style of football," Fletcher said. "I like to press on the corner and they said that they're going to press a lot and play a lot of man. I think I could play for someone like that."

Fletcher has scholarship offers from Cincinnati, and Bowling Green, but he's hearing from most of the top programs in the Midwest. The Irish didn't extend an offer, but based on the coaches reaction to Fletcher's visit, an offer could come soon.

"They didn't have my film, I actually just sent it to them," Fletcher explained. "They said that they're going to watch my film, but they said they're real interested. They sent me a schedule for spring practice, so they want me to come back."
