Irish Lose to FGCU

Things were looking up for the Notre Dame baseball team. The Irish had won three straight games and were one victory away from evening their record at .500. On Friday night at the FGCU Classic in Fort Myers, Florida, Notre Dame took on Florida Gulf Coast. The Irish once again got out to an early lead, a key to their winning streak, but couldn't hold on in the closing innings.

Notre Dame led 3-0 after four innings but allowed FGCU to stage a comeback and earn the victory 5-3. The loss sends the Irish to 7-9 on the year. Tomorrow, Notre Dame will take on Dayton. First pitch is slated for 1 PM at Swanson Field.

The Irish offense got it going in the third inning. Brett Lilley reached on a FGCU error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Both A.J. Pollock and Mike Dury walked to load the bases with two outs. Ryan Smith made FGCU pay as he plated a pair of Notre Dame runners with a single up the middle to make it 2-0 Irish. An inning later, Ryan Connolly singled in Danny Dressman to increase the lead to 3-0. Dressman was 2-for-4 on the day as Notre Dame totaled eight hits. Smith went 3-for-5 and Pollock added a two hits.

Irish starter Wade Korpi was cruising until the fifth inning. The defense let Notre Dame down when a single by Richie Sowell ended up costing them a run. Right fielder Billy Boockford made a error, letting Chris Allesandria score from first base to cut the FGCU deficit to 3-1. Sowell scored on Jason Peacock's base hit to make it 3-2 Irish.

FGCU tied it up at 3-all when Casey Coleman tripled in Josh Upchruch. On the play, Coleman scored on a throwing error by Lilley, giving FGCU a 4-3 lead. Jess Stewart relieved Korpi on the next at-bat. In the outing, Korpi (1-3) threw 5.1 innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits. The junior left-hander did strike out seven. Top Stories
