The recent junior day wasn't the first visit to Notre Dame for Garrett Goebel (6-foot-5, 270 pounds), so he had an idea of what to expect once he arrived. Nonetheless he was impressed by the attention he received from the Notre Dame coaching staff.
"I went to a game two years ago when they played Tennessee," Goebel recalled from his initial visit. "I didn't' really know anything about Notre Dame. I just went there and watched the game with a friend. I really liked what I saw. I really liked how the players played. The tradition was just incredible. The fans were great. It was awesome.
"This time I got to explore the Guglielmino complex, which is state of the art, and I got to know the coaches. I got enough personal time to establish a good relationship with coach Brown, my recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello and the defensive line coach, coach Oliver. Without that it seems like they're just coming up to you looking at your nametag.
"I talked with coach Corwin Brown for a while," Goebel said. "He told me what was going on with my situation and he seemed like he knew who I was. He was able to bring stuff up from my tape that he liked, that's how I knew he actually knew who I was. They had the defensive position meetings so I got to know the defensive line coach, coach Oliver. Then I spoke with my recruiting coordinator, Rob Ianello.
Goebel had hopes that he would leave the Notre Dame campus with a scholarship offer. Although the Irish didn't offer him, he still has the Irish high on his list of schools.
"Coach Brown really liked the way I played," Goebel recalled "He said that they were still very interested in me. He said it was still very early in the recruiting process and that I'm he's his type of guy.
"I'm still very interested in Notre Dame. I'm not ruling out anyone yet. They're definitely still in the game. Corwin Brown is only going to bring great things to that program. I'm just looking forward to seeing what their defense is going to be like next year. I definitely think he's going to be a great defensive coordinator. I think Notre Dame got very lucky to land him.
Until Goebel hears differently he's going to go about his business. He has a number of big-time offers and he is making plans to visit other schools this spring.
"I'm going to Ohio State on March 30," Goebel said. "I've only heard good things about coach Tressel. I'm really looking forward to seeing ‘The Horseshoe'. I've heard that they've done some renovations over the last couple years. I'm just looking forward to seeing Ohio State and meeting with the coaches since I haven't really been able to do that.
"I'm definitely interested in Wisconsin. I'll be heading up there. I was going up April 14, but I found out that I have to take the ACT that day so I'm looking to reschedule that. I'm still interested in Iowa. I want to get out there sometime. Illinois, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Arizona State, and Oklahoma State are the other schools that have offered."
