Gray Has The Gators On Top

In order to play with the top teams in the country Notre Dame needs to build quality depth at all positions. The Irish are beginning to do that at running back, but they need to add a top-flight ball carrier in this recruiting class. Jonas Gray of Detroit Country Day (Beverly Hills, Mich.) recently excelled at a combine and the Irish are taking a strong look at the standout running back.

Jonas Gray (5-foot-11, 215 pounds) recently spent a weekend participating in a Nike combine, and when the event ended he was one of the top players on the day.

"I did real well," Gray responded when asked about his results from the combine. "I liked competing against guys that I normally don't get to go up against. I do build a lot of confidence and I got to show people what I can do. I think it was a good thing for me."

Gray's effort will certainly produce additional scholarship offers and he's trying to keep an open mind, but with an offer from the defending national champions its getting difficult.

"Florida is still my top school," Gray said. "I think everyone after that is pretty even between Minnesota, Michigan State, Iowa, Colorado and Illinois. That's based on schools I have offers from.

"Notre Dame is definitely still in the picture. I talk to coach Brown almost every day either by text message or I'll call him. I'm definitely going to their camp on June 2. I'll see what goes on after that, and I'll know more about Notre Dame after camp."

"Coach Brown and I have a pretty good relationship. He's from Chicago, so we talk about that. We talk about Detroit, about basketball and really a bunch of subjects that don't really have to do with football. We just talk and interact like a coach and a player would. We do talk about football and how they've evaluated me. We talk about their depth chart and their expectations for the year.

"I like his approach that he takes with recruiting," Gray explained. "He's a person that I can go to with any problems that I have. I think he's open-minded, where I can talk to him about anything really. I have a real good relationship with him."

Although the home-state Michigan Wolverines haven't offered, they are still very much in the mix from Gray's signature. Jonas will take a visit to Ann Arbor this summer along with several other trips.

"I plan on taking unofficial visits this summer to Colorado, Florida, Michigan and Penn State," Gray said. " At the end of July I'm going to narrow things down to a top seven. By August I want to have a top five. I'll take my official visits and then narrow it down to a top three. After that I should have my decision. I'd like to recruit for whatever school I go to, so I'd like to have a decision by the end of September.

As a junior, Gray rushed for 1,252 yards and 19 touchdowns.
