Coaches Flock To See McGuffie

Sam McGuffie is one of the top running back prospects in the country and he's been watching the top coaches in the country stop by his high school during the May evaluation period. The standout running back from Cy-Fair High School (Cypress, Texas) has scholarship offers from coast-to-coast and Notre Dame is one of the schools that has extended him an offer.

Each day during the May evaluation period has been a big deal for Sam McGuffie (5-foot-11, 190 pounds). It seems like every day a new head coach drops by his school to check on him.

"Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Bobby Bowden…coaches from all over have stopped by," McGuffie responded when asked about his visitors during May. "It's pretty neat. It's an honor seeing all these guys with so much success take time to come down to see you from other parts of the United States.

"Coach Weis and coach Heywood stopped in my school. They came by and said, hello and that's about it. I talk to them once a week. They really just check in to see what's going on. We've got a relationship going. It's not hard to talk to them about anything really. They're wonderful people and they're great coaches."

Notre Dame would like to land McGuffie, but there have been rumblings that the Irish trail the lead pack of schools.

"They have a legit shot...definitely," McGuffie replied when asked if Notre Dame had ground to make up. "I've always liked Notre Dame. They know what they're doing. They have a NFL coaching staff and they produce running backs. The name Notre Dame has prestige and with Charlie Weis it's like, ‘wow'. When I think about Notre Dame I think about Rudy."

With well over 20 scholarship offers, McGuffie will need to start narrowing down his options.

"The more teams that come into the equation the harder it is for me… a lot harder," Sam said. "I have to go back and look at my sheet of paper where I have everything listed. I look at the style of offense, coaching staff and all the stuff. I've done a little bit, but trying to debate that with all the schools that I have listed is pretty hard.

"I really don't have a top five yet. I'll come out with a list before I make a decision or anything like that. I'm going to try and make a decision before school next year. I'll definitely have something narrowed down by then."
