Goebel Shines At Combine

There were a number of top prospects that competed at Scout.com's Chicago combine this Saturday. One of the elite prospects on hand was Garrett Goebel of Montini Catholic High School (Lombard, Ill.) During the one-on-one drills, Goebel showed everyone why he has the top programs in the country pursuing him.

Garrett Goebel (6-foot-5 ,270 pounds) had a big effort on Saturday at the Scout.com combine, but it wasn't easy, as there were several offensive linemen the challenged him.

"I had a good day against some quality guys," Goebel responded when asked the play at the combine. "(Graham) Pocic (Lemont High School, Ill.) and (Neil) Deiters (York High School, Ill.) were tough. There were a lot of guys from out of state that I hadn't seen before, but there were a lot of good players out here. It was fun to go up against some new faces.

"I thought I could have done better at some things, but I'll work on them. I learned a lot the first combine and I learned more today. It definitely makes me want to work harder. I want to work on my speed and getting off the ball, but I'm always looking to get better and improve everything. I think I'm pretty strong against the run, but I'm also a pretty good pass rusher. I think I can do both, I don't think I'm better at one or the other, I think I'm pretty solid at both of them."

Goebel is a priority for the Notre Dame staff. He made it to South Bend for a junior day in March, and he's heading back at the end of May for a closer look at the Irish program.

"I want to get a chance to sit down with coach Weis, Corwin Brown and coach Oliver," Goebel explained. "I really haven't gotten a chance to know coach Oliver that much, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what he's all about. I'm looking forward to getting a tour and the whole nine yards. They said that they are going to show me everything. I'm going to sit down with the academic guys… it's going to be everything.

"Coach Ianello and coach Brown are both recruiting me pretty heavily. I really like coach Brown's coaching philosophy He showed me some of their plays last time and I really liked what how he explained things. I just love what he does."

After his visit to Notre Dame, Garrett would like to see a couple more campuses before he makes his college choice.

"I want to go to Ohio State again," Goebel said. "I want to go to Michigan because I haven't been able to go there. Other than that I really don't have anything scheduled.

"I'm just about to narrow things down. I want to have a set five by the end of the month. I definitely want to have a decision by the start of my season."
