Dan McCarthy (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) has visited Notre Dame numerous times. He has also visited two other Midwest powerhouses several times. Last week he made a swing by each campus to get another look at what each program had to offer.
"I went to Michigan on Tuesday and walked around campus," McCarthy said when asked about his recent unofficial visits. "It was my third visit to Michigan. Then I went to Ohio State [last] Friday and walked around there as well. I talked to some of their recruits and coaches. Then on Saturday I went to Notre Dame with my brother. I went to the camp on Monday. I worked out little bit and talked to the coaches and some of their recruits. It was a good visit.
"I worked out for one session for a couple hours. I hadn't worked out in about five days so I wanted to get going. Coach Lewis ran us through drills and a lot of the stuff that they do. You can tell that's he's a great coach and he knows his stuff from his experience in the NFL. You can tell that he's going to have them doing some good things.
"I don't think I learned anything new [about Notre Dame]. It was just good to get up there and get a feel for it. I've been up there many times, so it was good to be back."
The objective of making visits to the schools Dan is considering is to make his decision easier, but as he is finding out that isn't necessarily the case.
"It is more difficult when you're around the coaches more, the players more, and the campus," Dan said. "You get a good feel for them, but it's hard to choose one of them. It makes it hard because they're all great guys and all guys that I would be friends with. You'd like to play with them all but when it comes down to it you have to choose one.
"They're three great programs and they all have great coaches. All three programs will do very well in the future. It's hard to decide. They're great schools, with great programs, with great people. Whenever I feel I know where I'm going to fit the best I'll make my decision. We'll see how it goes."
Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State aren't the only schools McCarthy is considering, Stanford and Penn State round out his top-five.
"Stanford is another great school with great coaches," Dan said. "They're recruiting me as a safety. It would also be another great place to play at.
"Penn State is another school that I'm looking at. They think I can fit their system at quarterback. I don't really care what position I play though. I just want the opportunity to get on the field and help the team."
