Notre Dame fans haven't heard a lot about Chris Harper (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) but they may in the near future. The Notre Dame staff had a chance to host Harper this week for an unofficial visit and Harper was impressed with what the Irish program had to offer.
"I got there [Wednesday] about 1:00 p.m. and then I left [Thursday] morning" Harper responded when asked about his visit to Notre Dame. "The director of football operations and coach Brown were around. They took us around and showed us everything. I met a lot of the players. I was actually around the players most of the time. I really didn't know what to expect, but there are a lot of good people there. They're laid back and cool. I was with Demetrius Jones, George West and James Aldridge.
"It was real nice. They were telling that there were only 8,000 students there, so it wouldn't be too big of a transition from high school as some of these other schools. Walking around campus it looked like they had done a lot of work the last two or three years.
"It's a private school so academics is real big up there," Harper said. "It's a place I could have a chance to play real early. They're recruiting me to play wide receiver. If I didn't play quarterback, wide receiver is the next position that I'd want to play."
Harper is an exciting player with the ball in his hands. He'd prefer to play quarterback, but the position he's plays in college won't be the deciding factor for him.
"I want to play quarterback, but there are other factors that will go into my decision," Harper said. "The position that a school wants me to play won't be the deciding factor, but it will influence my decision. I want to play quarterback, but other factors may overcome what position a school wants me to play.
"I have about 15 scholarships offers," Harper explained. "Off the top of my head, I have offers from Nebraska, Texas A&M, Cal, Kansas State, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma State.
"I think [Notre Dame] is getting close to offering me. I haven't had a chance to talk to coach Weis yet, and he's the one that gives the scholarships out. I'll probably wait until around the start of my season before I narrow my schools down. I'm trying to get it down to about five schools before the start of my season."
